The place name mentioned in 1376 as Asathorppa is a combination of torp (newly laid out courtyard) as the second part and either the genitive of as (Os) or possibly the male name Ase as the first part.
On the outskirts of Åsarp is Ekehagens forntidsby , a museum village , which is supposed to give a lively impression of prehistoric and early historical building and living. The Ätran flows through the town .
Runestone
At Åsarp there is also a rune stone called Olsbrostenen or Alvaredsstenen. Due to its original and unusual ornamentation for Västergötland, it is considered one of the most remarkable rune stones in the province. The stone ship of Alvared is also in place.
