Olsbrosten

The Olsbrosten ( Olsbrostein or Alvaredsten , Vg 181) is a rune stone in Frugården, west of Åsarp , about 21 km south of Falköping on Reichsstrasse 46 in the Swedish province of Västra Götalands län . It was possibly carved around 970 and is dedicated to a man who died in " Eistland " ( Baltic States ). The stone is counted among the Baltic Sea rune stones and has an unusual ornamentation that depicts the large animal under a cross .

description

The stone is about 2.1 m high and 1.6 m wide. Its original ornamentation with the depiction of the "Big Beast" under a cross is unusual for Vestergötland and makes it one of the most remarkable rune stones in the province. The stone may have been carved by a rune master Håvard around 970 . Similar runic inscriptions have been found in Denmark. The carver may have been the same as one of the Jelling rune stones .

inscription

The Olsbrosten is the only stone in Sweden that mentions Eistland , the Nordic term for a Baltic region.

The inscription reads:

"Kufi: rsþi: stin: þesi: eftR: ulaf: sun: sin * trk * hrþa * kuþan * hn * uarþ * trbin * i * estlatum * hu (a) rþ (r) * iuk * s ---"

German:

“Gufi erected this stone in memory of Ólafr, his son, a very brave man. He was killed in Eistland. Hávarðr created this stone. "
