Ätran in Falkenberg |
With a length of 150 miles, Ätran is the longest river of the four major rivers on Sweden's west coast (the others are Viskan , Nissan and Lagan ). It rises at an altitude of 332 m from a moor near Gullered ( Ulricehamn municipality ) in the province of Västra Götalands län .
The river flows through the southwestern Västergötland and Halland and flows into the Kattegat at Falkenberg . For the most part (64%) it is surrounded by forest.
The flow rate was recorded at the Yngeredsfors hydropower plant. Between 1909 and 1967 it was 37.2 m 3 / s on average . The highest value ever measured was 275 m 3 / s, the lowest 5–7 m 3 / s.
Its largest tributary is the Högvadsån , which flows into the Ätran at Ätrafors.
The Ätran is known for the possibility of catching salmon , especially in the municipality of Falkenberg .
history
Along the Ätran passed over millennia a narrow pass which as Ridvägen or especially in this area as Ätrastigen was designated. The river and the trade route formed the border between Denmark and Sweden several times in the Middle Ages, and many battles were fought in the adjacent zone.
Hydropower plants
There are eight hydropower plants along the Ätran, and another two on its tributaries. The two with the largest drop heights are Yngeredsfors (28.3 m; built in 1907) and (m 23.5; built in 1918) in the course next below then Ätrafors whose reservoir Ätraforsdammen for a nearby location usually locally Askomedammen is called.
