Falkenberg is a town in the Swedish province of Halland County and the historic province of Halland . The place is located at the mouth of the Ätran River and is the main town of the municipality of the same name .

history

During the Iron Age and the Vendel Period , there were five possible settlements in the area around Falkenberg: Stafsinge , Slöinge , Köinge , Abild / Vessige and Asige . With the exception of Stafsinge, settlement seems to be declining around 900. At the same time, the area around Stafsinge and Falkenberg gained increasing importance and developed into a trading center. The area has one of the largest concentrations in Skåneland of silver and coin treasures from the Viking Age . These treasures are from the early 900s, before the Jelling Dynasty unified Denmark .

Falkenberg was first mentioned in writing at the end of the 13th century . Falkenberg Fortress was destroyed by Engelbrekt's troops in 1434 and was never rebuilt. The city's first known letter of privilege dates from 1558. Between the 14th century and the Three Crowns War (1563–1570) there was a twin city in addition to Falkenberg with Ny-Falkenberg. Until 1645 the city, like the entire province of Halland, was part of Denmark. The city first grew on the northern side of the Ätran River, but began to expand to the southern side of the river in the 20th century.

The newspaper Hallands Nyheter has been published in Falkenberg since 1905 .
