Abild Sogn ( dt .: Abel ) is a parish municipality (Danish Sogn ) in North Schleswig , today in the region of Syddanmark , Denmark . It is located north of the city of Tønder (German Tondern ) and just under 10 km north of the German-Danish border . From 1970 she belonged to the Tønder Kommune (German Kommune Tondern ) and in 2007 it became part of the enlarged Tønder Kommune .

Municipal area

The area of the community lies on the gently hilly Schleswig Geest . The highest point at Kongsbjerg (German Königsberg ) is 25 meters above sea level, but the actual height differences in the landscape are rarely more than 5 meters. The soil is mostly of a light type. It is only more fertile in the vicinity of the church village and Söllstedt to the north of it. These two places also form the main settlement areas of the parish, while the other residential areas are fairly scattered.

The parish of Abild has an area of 52.84 km² and around 1100 inhabitants, 550 of them in Abild itself (as of January 1, 2020). In the Prussian period from 1867 to 1920 it was divided into five rural communities:

  • Abel (Danish Abild, 1330 Apæld) with the residential areas Abitzkjer (Abildskær), Steinhof (Stengaard), Washington and Westergaard
  • Söllstedt (Danish: Sølsted, 1231 Sylstedt, 1348 called Silfsted) with the residential areas Blauberg (Blåbjerg), Holm, Kohoi, Nyland and Porremose
  • Tüchschau (Danish Tyvse, 1548 Tyufshodt, later Tykskov) with the residential areas Hummelhof (Humlehave) and Klienburg (Klinborg)
  • Höxlund (Danish Høgslund, 1365 Høxlundt, di "Habichtshain") with the living quarters Königsberg (Kongsbjerg, 1503 Kunghenszberghe) and Traustedt (Travsted) and the colonists Dammhaus (Damhus), Friedrichsgabe (Frederiksgave), Jesperlund and Trilde
  • Wennemoos (Danish: Vennemose) with the residential areas Abelgaard (Abildgaard), Brodersgaard, Lykgaard, Norstedt (Nørsted), Nyhus and Süder-Wennemoos, as well as Göhl (Gøl), who disappeared around 1900

history

Church in Abild

Like most of the churches in the old Duchy of Schleswig , the Nikolaikirche was built by Abild in the 12th century. Administratively, the parish belonged to Ellumsyssel, whose center Ellum is not far north of the parish. The lower court and police district was initially the Højerharde (German Hoyerharde ) with Højer (German Hoyer ) further west as the main town. When this was geographically divided by the acquisition of the middle parishes around Møgeltønder (German Mögeltondern ) by the Bishop of Ribe (German Ripen ), the eastern part with Abild became independent as Tønderharde (German Tonderharde ). In the 14th century the Ellumsyssel lost its importance when the offices rose. Abild belonged to the Amt Tønder (German Amt Tondern ).

However, the Bishop of Ribe also acquired some positions in the parish of Abild. The Løgum monastery and the aristocratic Solvig manor in the neighboring church of Hostrup also acquired properties in Abild in the Middle Ages, so that there were four different jurisdictions. The Riben possessions even belonged to the Kingdom of Denmark and not to the Duchy of Schleswig .

After the Reformation the monastery Løgum (German Lügum ) was abolished. Its possessions, however, formed an administrative unit as a secular office Løgumkloster (German Lügumkloster ). This also included the free float in the Abild parish until 1864, which together with some free float further west formed the Abild bailiwick. The possessions of Solvig were again subordinated to the Harde in 1724 , but also remained in existence as the municipality of Solvig until 1864 in terms of economic and financial management with the other free float. 1544–1581 Abild belonged (with the exception of the Ripen possessions) to the Hadersleben Duchy under Johann the Elder , then until 1713 to Gottorf .

In the 19th century, the parish of Abild, like the entire Duchy of Schleswig, was drawn into the pull of nationalism. The inhabitants were predominantly Danish, but the town of Tønder (German Tondern ), located immediately to the south, joined the German-Schleswig-Holstein side. In 1864 the entire parish of Abel and Schleswig fell to Prussia . In 1867 the Amt Tønder (German Amt Tondern ) was transformed into the Prussian district of Tondern , and Abild was subordinated to a new Hardesvogtei Tondern, which was placed in the Hardesvogtei Wiesby in 1871.

In 1889, the Hardesvogteien in Schleswig were replaced by uniform administrative districts. The Abel district, which existed until 1920, included the entire parish as well as the parishes of the Tondern rural parish, namely Twedt and Groß and Klein Emmerschede.

In the referendum on state membership on February 10, 1920, 402 people in the parish of Abild voted for Denmark and 219 for Germany. From June 15, 1920 Abild was a Danish parish land municipality. In 1970 she became part of the municipality of Tønder in Sønderjyllands Amt .

The original march line only touches the municipality in the southwest, the next stop is in the western neighboring church of Visby .

Both the parish village and Søllstedt are on the main road A 11. This is the continuation of the green coastal road to the north and forms the main artery of the western part of the country. North of Abild, the A 25 branches off to Kolding .
