Møgeltønder (German: Mögeltondern ) is a Danish village west of Tønder near the German-Danish border . It belongs to the municipality of Tønder in the Syddanmark region and the parish of Møgeltønder Sogn . The 835 inhabitants (January 1, 2020) are called Mögeltonderaner (Danish: møgeltøndringer ).

The place is known for Schackenborg Castle , which was Prince Joachim of Denmark's residence from 1993 to 2014 .

history

The site, first in 1150 as Tundira mentioned in 1288 as Mykæltundær from altdänisch mykil (large) and tønder (possibly tinder fungus ). Today's big neighbor Tønder was still called Lytlætunder , Klein-Tondern , around 1313 .

The place owed its growth to the manor, initially a castle of the Rantzaus ( Møgeltønderhus , first mentioned in 1233). Originally a fiefdom of the Bishop of Ribe , Møgeltønderhus and the associated area were confiscated by the crown in the course of the Reformation in 1536 - like the entire secular property of the church. The district was incorporated into the kingdom as an enclave , while the surrounding area continued to belong to the Duchy of Schleswig . From 1661 the estate was owned by the von Schack family , after whom it is named Schackenborg . From 1662 to 1666, today's castle was built and the farm was renewed. In 1680 Otto Didrik Graf Schack had Schlossstrasse built and, thanks to tax exemptions, moved traders and craftsmen to the town.

After the German-Danish War , the village belonged to Prussia from 1867 and to the German Empire from 1871 . In the referendum in Schleswig in 1920, 712 Mögeltonderaner voted for Denmark and 113 (13.7 percent) for Germany. Since it was in the northern voting zone I, the village fell under the Versailles Treaty to Denmark.

Møgeltønder belonged to Harde Møgeltønder Herred in Tønder Amt until 1970 and from 1970 to 2007 to Tønder Municipality in Sønderjyllands Amt . In the course of the municipal reform on January 1, 2007 , the municipality grew to become the new Tønder municipality .
