history

Danish dioceses in the Middle Ages

After the first church in Haithabu / Schleswig , Ribe is the oldest church in Northern Europe. Around 860, the apostle Ansgar founded the first church here, but it was destroyed in 888. The diocese of Ribe was founded in 948 and, like Schleswig and Aarhus, was affiliated to the archdiocese of Hamburg-Bremen as a suffragan. The construction of the stone cathedral began around 1100 during the term of office of Bishop Thure. In 1145 a cathedral chapter and a cathedral school were founded. During the reign of King Christian III. the Reformation was introduced in the 1530s . The diocese of Ribe was converted into an evangelical church province. It still encompassed not only the southwest of Jutland , but also the northwest of the Duchy of Schleswig, which developed from 1200 onwards as a fief (at times also in personal union) with the Kingdom of Denmark . The episcopal possessions south of Königsau (including Møgeltønder ) were secularized, but still formed exclaves of the kingdom until 1867.

When Northern Schleswig became an integral part of Denmark in 1920, the diocese of Ribe was reduced in size in favor of the newly created diocese Haderslev , whose main part had previously belonged to the diocese of Schleswig . The diocese had to hand over other areas to the diocese of Viborg . In contrast, it got back large areas of the Prussian district of Tondern , which had been in Prussia since 1867 and had to be ceded to Denmark after the referendum in Schleswig .
