The Diocese of Roskilde was founded in 991 as a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Hamburg-Bremen , from 1104 it belonged to the Church Province of Lund , which until then had also been a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Hamburg-Bremen.

After the Reformation , the Lutheran Diocese of Zealand was established in place of the Catholic diocese . The bishops of Zealand, who at the same time had the function of primus inter pares among the Danish bishops, resided in Copenhagen, but had Roskilde Cathedral as their main church.

The Roman Catholic Church led the Diocese of Roskilde to 1964 as titular Roskilde continued

In 1922, the Diocese of Zealand was divided into the smaller, but more densely populated Diocese of Copenhagen, which (until the separation of the Diocese of Helsingør in 1961) comprised the entire capital region , and the new Diocese of Roskilde.
