Titular diocese of Roskilde
Roskilde ( Italian : Roeskilde, Roschildia ) is a titular bishopric of the Roman Catholic Church .
It goes back to a bishopric in the town of Roskilde on the island of Zealand , Denmark . The Diocese of Roskilde was founded in 991 as a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Hamburg-Bremen , from 1104 it belonged to the church province of Lund , which until then had also been a suffragan of Hamburg-Bremen.
The diocesan area included - each with the offshore smaller islands - the Baltic islands of Zealand , Mön and Rügen , the latter of which was Danish from 1168 to 1325 and then Pomeranian .
After the Reformation , the Catholic diocese of Roskilde became the Lutheran diocese of Zealand (but without Rügen) and the now Lutheran bishop resided in Copenhagen . In 1922 the Diocese of Zealand was divided into the Diocese of Copenhagen and the new Diocese of Roskilde.
The titular diocese of Roskilde was dissolved in 1964 and is therefore one of the "historical" titular dioceses.
