history
The diocese of Viborg was founded around 1065 by dividing the diocese of Ribe . The first stone cathedral was built between 1125 and 1200. The burial chapel of the cathedral provost Kjeld , canonized in 1188, was an important pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages. During the Reformation , Viborg was one of the centers from which Luther's new teaching spread throughout the country. Hans Tausen was able to preach evangelical under the protection of the citizenry as early as 1525 and very soon spread his writings through a printing press. In 1536 King Christian III. put the last Roman Catholic Bishop Jørgen Friis in prison. In 1537, with the introduction of Jacob Schøning as superintendent (the superintendent only later reassumed the title of bishop) by Johannes Bugenhagen, the conversion into a Protestant diocese was completed.
