Kjeld von Viborg (* around 1100 at Randers ; † 1150 in Viborg ) was provost at Viborg Cathedral and teacher at the local cathedral school . He is a saint of the Catholic Church .

Life

Kjeld came from a noble family and received a thorough education. At the age of twenty he became a canon in Viborg and a Latin teacher at the cathedral school. After he was ordained a priest , he went on a pilgrimage to Rome and asked the Pope to entrust him with the mission at the Wends . However, he recommended him to the Viborg cathedral chapter as a shepherd. Kjeld died there in 1150 as a cathedral provost.

According to tradition, numerous healing miracles soon occurred at Kjeld's grave in Viborg Cathedral . 1188 the king and the bishops of Denmark asked the Pope for the Canonization Kjelds that on 11 July 1189 with the collection of his bones was performed. A chapel with a shrine for the current city ​​patron was built at the cathedral , and July 11th became the festival and fair day in Viborg.

With the Reformation the worship of Kjeld ceased. During the neo-Romanesque restoration of the cathedral in the 19th century, the St. Kjeld chapel was not renewed.
