Gunner (Viborg)
Gunner (* 1152 ; † August 25, 1251 in Asmild (today part of the Viborg municipality )) was a Danish clergyman and bishop of the Viborg diocese . He is of particular importance as the main author of Jutian law .
Life
Gunner studied in Paris and was considered one of Denmark's most important scholars. In 1208 he entered the order of the Cistercians and in 1216 became abbot in the monastery Øm . When he was elected bishop in Viborg at the age of 70 in 1222, he was only considered a transitional candidate. He promoted monastic life and liked to retire to Asmild Monastery, where he died after his resignation, which he had requested in 1245. The Vita Gunneri episcopi Viborgensis was written just over a decade after his death .
The Bisp Gunners Guild, founded in 2000, serves as a reminder of his work .
