Alsen-Ærø diocese

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Diocese Alsen-Bistrø ( Danish : Als-Ærø Stift ) was a diocese of the Danish People's Church . It was separated from the Diocese of Odense in 1819 because the islands of Ærø and Als belonged to the Duchy of Schleswig and thus a different school law applied than on Funen , which formed the main part of the diocese. The new diocese comprised only 18 parishes and was subordinated to the diocese of Schleswig under civil law .

After the victory in the German-Danish War , Prussia abolished the office of bishop in Als in April 1864, which has now been integrated into the diocese of Schleswig. However, Bishop Jørgen Hansen continued to serve on Ærø until he was deposed by the king on December 19, 1864 under Prussian pressure. The diocese was thus dissolved; Ærø returned to the Diocese of Funen .
