Pita Sharples
Sir Pita Russell Sharples , KNZM , CBE , (born July 20, 1941 in Waipawa , Hawke's Bay ) is a New Zealand politician and one of the co-leaders of the Māori Party since 2004 .
Life
Pita Sharples was born on July 20, 1941 in Waipawa , Hawke's Bay . He describes himself as belonging to the Iwi Ngai Te Kikiri o te Rangi , a branch of the Ngāti Kahungunu . Sharples lives 20 km west of Waipukurau in Takapau . He is married and has five children.
Education
Sharples attended Primary School in Takapau from 1946 to 1952 , moved to District High School in Waipukurau in 1954 , followed by Te Aute College in Pukehou , Hawke's Bay in 1957 and graduated there in 1960.
He studied geography and anthropology at the University of Auckland from 1961 to 1966 , graduating with a Bachelor of Arts . He received his diploma as a teacher after completing his studies at the Auckland Post Primary Teacher's College , which lasted from 1963 to 1966. This was followed by a Masters in Anthropology in 1968 and a PhD in Anthropology and Linguistics in 1976, both at the University of Auckland .
Professional career
In 1965 Sharples worked as a teacher at Lynfield College in Auckland , followed from 1966 to 1969 the offer to teach at the Department of Anthropology at the University of Auckland . In 1972 he took over the post of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Office of the Race Relations Conciliator and changed from 1981 to 1990 to the Department of Māori Affairs , where he became Director of Culture .
From 1989 to 1990 he was director of the Māori program at the Commonwealth Games in New Zealand in 1990 . In 1991 he became a Consultant for the Department of Justice , followed by the Ministry of Education in 1992, Ministry of Health in 1993 and for the Sky City Casino Project from 1993 to 1996.
From 1997 to 2000 he was at the International Institute for Research into Indigenous and Maori Education worked and took over at the same time a visiting professor at the School of Education at the University of Auckland and 1998 for a year at the International Research Institute for Maori and Indigenous Education of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Auckland . In 2001 he was professor at the Unitec Institute of Technology in Auckland for a year . In 2003 he became director of Arapita Ltd and in 2005 of Paerangi Ltd , positions which he currently still holds.
Political career
With the founding of the Māori Party in July 2004, Pita Sharples was elected alongside Tariana Turia as the party's equal chairman.
After the Māori Party increased its seats to five in the 2008 general election, Prime Minister- elect John Key of the Māori Party's National Party made an offer to join the government. The Māori Party accepted the offer despite considerable reservations and reservations, but refused to allow its ministers to participate in the cabinet.
Pita Sharples became Minister of Māori Affairs , Associate Minister of Education and Associate Minister of Corrections . His constituency is the Māori Electorate Tāmaki Makaurau , which includes parts of Waitakere City and Manukau City of the Auckland Council . Sharples won this constituency for the first time in 2005 and outclassed then-constituency holder John Tamihere of the Labor Party (9.44%) with a share of the vote of 52.35% . In 2008 Sharples was able to increase its share of the vote to 65.98%.
Awards
In 1990 Sharples received the Order of the British Empire's CBE for his services to the New Zealand educational system .
