geography

Geographical location

The Hawke's Bay Region covers 14,137 km² of pure land area the entire part of the coastal region around the Hawke Bay with its hinterland, including the mountain regions of the Ruahine Range , Kaweka Range and Ahimanawa Range and the mountain ranges which border Lake Waikaremoana to the west . With 151,179 inhabitants in 2013, the region has a population density of 10.7 inhabitants per km², making it one of the regions with the lowest population density on the North Island.

In addition to seven larger rivers, the region has a coastline of around 350 km. The largest cities include Hastings with 70,860 inhabitants (2006) and Napier City with 57,240 inhabitants (2013), followed by Havelock North with around 12,000, Wairoa with just under 4,300, Waipukurau with around 4,000, Waipawa with just under 1,900 and Clive with around 1,350 inhabitants .

climate

The climate of the region is quite different. The prevailing south to south-westerly wind sometimes causes temperature fluctuations. The mean daytime temperatures are between 16 and 24 ° C in summer and between 0 and 8 ° C in winter, depending on the altitude. The duration of sunshine is also not uniform and ranges from 2200 hours per year to under 1900 hours in the mountain regions. The precipitation varies between 800 and 1400 mm per year. Only in the mountains in the west and north-west is the precipitation above the 2000 mm mark.

history

On November 1, 1858, Hawke's Bay was separated from what was then the province of Wellington and was given rights as an independent province. It retained its independent status until all of the country's provinces were dissolved in 1876.

In the course of the administrative reform in 1989 Hawke's Bay lost areas in the south to the Manawatu-Wanganui region . Many people in the affected localities, such as Dannevirke or Woodville , still feel connected to their former region.

population

Population development

Of the 151,179 inhabitants of the region in 2013, 34,662 people were of Māori origin (22.9%). This means that 5.8% of the country's Māori population lived in the Hawke's Bay region . The median income for the population in 2013 was NZ $ 26,100  compared to NZ $ 28,500 national average.

Origin and languages

When asked about ethnic group membership in the 2013 census, 77.7% said they were European, 24.3% said they had Māori roots, 4.4% came from the islands of the Pacific and 3.6% % came from Asia (multiple answers were possible). 14.7% of the population said they were born overseas and 6.6% of the population spoke Māori , compared to 24.3% among the Māori .

politics

administration

The Hawke's Bay Region has a board of directors called the Regional Council , which is led by a chairman . In the Council sit nine elected councilors (council members), the five constituencies (constituencies), Napier and Hastings each with three councilors , Wairoa , Ngaruroro and Hawke's Bay with one councilor represented. The council members, who choose the chairman from their ranks, are re-elected every three years.

Furthermore, the region is divided into five districts and an independent city:

While the regional administration is responsible for the inland and coastal waters, for the ports, for land, air, erosion, disaster control, transport planning and regional development, the administrations of the districts are responsible for all other concerns of the citizens and the matters which are in a Local authority must be regulated.

economy

The most important economic sectors in the region are agriculture , horticulture (apples, stone fruits and vegetables), viticulture and tourism. Forestry was also an important source of income. Important export business for the region is carried out through the port of Napier .

Infrastructure

traffic

The Hawke's Bay region is accessible by the New Zealand State Highway 2 and 5 , both of which cross the region as main routes, and the State Highway 50 and 38 , which open up parts of the area.
