Waipawa is a place in the Central Hawke's Bay District of the Hawke's Bay region on the North Island of New Zealand . The place is the seat of the Central Hawke's Bay District Council .

geography

The place is located around 40 km southwest of Hastings and around 51 km northeast of Dannevirke on the north bank of the Waipawa River . The closest place is Waipukurau , about 7 km to the south. The New Zealand State Highway 2 runs through Waipawa and connects the town with the cities of Hawke's Bay in the northeast and to the southwest with Dannevirke and Woodville . The railway connection of the Palmerston North – Gisborne Line also runs through Waipawa , although there is no stopping point in the town.

history

The businessman Frederick Sedgwick Abbott bought 9,600 acres of land at the ford of the Waipawa River for 2,000 sheep, 20 cattle and 2 horses after 1851 when the government commissioned Donald McLean offered land for sale in the area of ​​what is now Waipawa . He called the place to cross the river Abbott's Ford . From 1860 he sold shares of his land to settlers and artisans, through which the town of Abbottsford was finally created with a few houses, two pubs, a blacksmith and other small traders. The place was later given its current name.

In 1908 the place was given the status of a city according to the standards of the time, in 1978 when the Waipawa District was founded with Waipawa County and in 1990 the Waipawa District and Waipukurau District were merged to form Central Hawke's Bay District . Waipawa lost its independent administration in 1978.

In the 2013 census, the town had 1965 inhabitants, 2.2% more than in the 2006 census.

economy

Waipawa is a service center for the surrounding area, in which sheep and cattle are raised, but also horticulture is practiced. Within the village there are some industrial companies that are active in mechanical engineering, wood processing and the building materials industry.

The main employers are three transport companies and a packaging company from Mr Apple New Zealand , which is a subsidiary of Scales Corporation Ltd and which packs 2.2 million cases of apples for export during the season.

Attractions

In Waipawa is the Stettler's Museum , which tells something about the history of the place. The museum is housed in a former Bank of New Zealand building that dates back to 1910.
