Waipukurau is a small town in the Central Hawke's Bay District of the Hawke's Bay region on the North Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The name of the city is formed in the Māori language from the two terms " wai " for water and " pukurau " for a large white mushroom (clathrus cibarium) that grows in the area and is soaked in water, edible.
geography
The city is located around 46 km southwest of Hastings and around 45 km northeast of Dannevirke on the southern bank of the Tukituki River . The closest town is Waipawa , about 7 km to the north. The New Zealand State Highway 2 runs through Waipukurau and connects the city with the cities of Hawke's Bay in the northeast and to the southwest with Dannevirke and Woodville . The Palmerston North – Gisborne Line , which has a train station in the city , also runs through Waipukurau .
history
It was the settler Henry Robert Russell , who in 1867 bought the land of their former Pā (village) from the local Māori and leased plots of land for 99 years for little money. He had cottages built for everyone who needed them urgently and thus formed a small community in which he made space for a school, a church, a town hall, a hospital and a cemetery, and founded various short-lived businesses. Known in the town for their generosity, Russell and his wife Susanna , along with his sister-in-law Harriet Herbert , were Russell Waipukurau's most influential man.
In 1912 the place was given the status of a city according to the standards of the time and in 1977 it was merged with Waipukurau County to form Waipukurau District .
population
In the 2013 census, the town had 3741 inhabitants, 6.6% less than in the 2006 census.
economy
Waipukurau is the service and trade center of the region, whose main source of income is sheep farming. In the city itself there are industrial companies, the woodworking sector, manufacturers of agricultural machinery and concrete products.
Most jobs are seasonal and either from the meat processing company Bernard Matthew's New Zealand Ltd. or the agriculture and horticulture of the area.
