The Hastings District is an administrative unit in the Hawke's Bay region in New Zealand . The district council, called Hastings District Council , has its seat in the city of Hastings , as does the district administration.

Geographical location

The district is the largest district in the Hawke's Bay region with 5226 km² of pure land area . With 73,245 inhabitants in 2013, the district has a population density of 14.0 inhabitants per km², making it the district with the most inhabitants and the largest Population density of the region.

The Hastings District is bordered to the south by the Central Hawke's Bay District , to the west by Rangitikei District , which is around 90% part of the Manawatu-Wanganui region, and to the northwest by the Taupo District , which is around 70% part of the Waikato region . To the north and northeast is the Wairoa District and the eastern border is Hawke Bay along with the city of Napier .

The district is largely characterized by a mountain landscape. The few plains, such as the Heretaunga Plains, are essentially in the area around the city of Hastings and along the Ngaruroro River . In the west lies the mountain chain of the Ruahine Range and in the northwest the Kaweka Range with the 1724  m high Mount Kaweka .

The district's climate is rich in variations. The prevailing south to south-westerly wind sometimes causes temperature fluctuations. The mean daytime temperatures are between 16 and 23 ° C in summer and between 0 and 6 ° C in winter, depending on the altitude. The duration of sunshine is also not uniform in the entire district, from 2100 hours per year it decreases in the west to below 1800 hours. The rainfall varies between 800 and 1100 mm per year. Only the west and north-west towards the Ruahine Range and Kaweka Range reaches precipitation beyond 2000 mm.

In 1860 the place Havelock North was founded and in 1884 the place Hastings . In 1956 Hastings received city rights and was merged in 1989 as part of the administrative reform with the Havelock North Borough Council and Hawke's Bay County Council to form Hastings District Council .

Population development

Of the 73,245 inhabitants of the district in 2013, 16,821 inhabitants were of Māori origin (23.0%). 2.8% of the country's Māori population lived in the Hastings District . The median income for the population in 2013 was NZ $ 26,500  compared to NZ $ 28,500 national average.

Origin and languages

When asked about ethnic group membership in the 2013 census, 75.2% said they were European, 24.4% said they had Māori roots, 6.0% came from the islands of the Pacific and 4.3% % came from Asia (multiple answers were possible). 15.7% of the population said they were born overseas and 6.8% of the population spoke Māori , with the Māori 24.9%.

The Hastings District is again divided into five wards , the Hastings / Havelock North Ward with eight Councilors , the Flaxmere Ward with two and the Kahuranaki Ward , the Mohaka Ward and the Heretaunga Ward each with one Councilor . Together with the Mayor (mayor) they form the District Council (district council). The mayor and the thirteen councilors are re-elected every three years.

The New Zealand headquarters of the "Heinz-Watties" company, which sells tomato sauces and ketchup under the name " Heinz ", is located in Hastings . In addition to agriculture, horticulture and viticulture are of particular importance in the district.

Two smaller ridges flank the two New Zealand State Highways 2 and 50 , which cross the southern part of the district in a south-westerly direction. The State Highways 2 formed by the cities Hastings and Napier leads, leaving the district close to the coast in the northeast. North of Napier , State Highway 5 branches off to the northwest towards Taupo .
