The Carterton District is one for Region Wellington belonging management unit in New Zealand . The district council, called the Carterton District Council , is based in the city of Carterton , as is the district administration.

Geographical location
With 1180 km² of pure land area, the district is the second smallest district in the Wellington region. With 8235 inhabitants in 2013, the district has a population density of 7.0 inhabitants per km², making it the district with the second lowest population density in the region.
The west of the Carterton District borders the Kapiti Coast District , the Masterton District to the north and the South Wairarapa District to the south . The eastern border is formed by the coastline to the Pacific Ocean .
While the area around Carterton is a plain, the west of the district extends into the mountainous regions of the Tararua Range . The eastern part, however, is characterized by a mountain and hilly landscape that does not protrude more than 600 m . The economic center and only town of the district is Carterton with 4686 inhabitants (2013), all other places have less than 1000 inhabitants.

The mean daytime temperatures in summer are between 20 ° C and 24 ° C depending on the location and in winter between 6 ° C and below 0 ° C depending on the altitude. The duration of sunshine is between 2000 hours and 2100 hours per year, in mountain locations less than 1700 hours. The precipitation is between 1000 mm in the east of the district and over 2000 mm per year in the west in the mountains.
history
Carterton was originally founded in 1857 under the name " Three Mile Bush " as a base camp for the workers who built the road between Masterton and Greytown . The settlers who settled in the place asked to rename the place, most recently the region in Cartervale and the place in Carterville , in honor of Charles Rooking Carter , who had made a contribution to the settlement project in the area. On July 26, 1859, the Provincial Council in Wellington decided to rename the place, but from " Three Mile Bush " in Carterton .

Of the 8,235 inhabitants of the district in 2013, 933 people were of Māori origin (11.3%). This means that 0.2% of the country's Māori population lived in the Carterton District . The median income for the population in 2013 was NZ $ 26,700 , compared to NZ $ 28,500 national average.
Origin and languages
When asked about ethnic group membership in the 2013 census, 91.4% said they were European, 11.8% said they had Māori roots, 1.9% came from the islands of the Pacific and 1.4% % came from Asia (multiple answers were possible). 14.9% of the population said they were born overseas and 2.3% of the population spoke Māori , among the Māori 14.9%.

The Carterton District is not divided into different wards as we know it from the other districts of New Zealand. The eight Councilors are elected district-wide and together with the Mayor they form the District Council . The mayor and the eight council members are re-elected every three years.
economy
In 2015, the district had 1,191 companies with a total of 3,298 employees. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was NZ $ 324 million in the same period . By far the largest branch of industry in the district is the manufacturing industry with a share of 29% of GDP, followed by agriculture and forestry together with fishing with 14.8% and the real estate sector with 8%.

The district is connected by the New Zealand State Highway 2 , which crosses the district in a north-south direction and leads directly through the city of Carterton .
