The Matamata-Piako District is an administrative unit in the Waikato region in New Zealand . The district council, called Matamata-Piako District Council ( District Council ), has its seat in the city of Te Aroha , as does the district administration.

Geographical location

The Matamata-Piako District is the third smallest district in the Waikato region with 1755 km² of pure land . With 31,536 inhabitants counted in 2013, the district has a population density of 18.0 inhabitants per km².

The western border of the district is formed by the Waikato District . In the north this is the Hauraki District , in the east the Western Bay of Plenty District , which is already part of the Bay of Plenty region , and in the south the border is divided by the Waipa District and the South Waikato District . The landscape of the district is characterized by the southern part of the Hauraki Plains and the Kaimai Range to the east .

The largest cities in the district are in sequence Morrinsville with around 6600 inhabitants, Matamata with around 6300 inhabitants and Te Aroha , which houses the administration of the district with around 3750 inhabitants.

The district's climate is similar to that of the Hauraki District to the north . The daytime temperatures are between 22 ° C and 26 ° C in summer and between 10 ° C and 16 ° C in winter.

Population development

Of the district's 31,536 residents, 4491 were of Māori origin in 2013 (14.2%). The median income for the population in 2013 was NZ $ 29,700  compared to NZ $ 28,500 national average.

Origin and languages

When asked about ethnic group membership in the 2013 census, 86.3% said they were European, 14.8% said they had Māori roots, 1.6% came from the islands of the Pacific region and 3.9% came from Asia (multiple answers were possible). 13.1% of the population said they were born overseas and 3.6% of the population spoke Māori , 21.4% of the Māori .

The Matamata-Piako District itself is divided into three wards , the Te Aroha Ward , the Matamata Ward and the Morrinsville Ward . While the Te Aroha Ward sends three Councilors to the District Council, there are four each in the other two. Together with the Mayor (mayor) they form the District Council (district council). The mayor and the twelve council members are re-elected every three years.

In 2013, the district had 5,228 companies with a total of 16,348 employees. The gross domestic product (GDP) of the district in the same period was around 1.6 billion NZ $, with the two most important branches of industry being the manufacturing industry with 25.2% of GDP and agriculture and forestry with 24.6% represented. Within these categories, the dairy industry had the largest share with 19.3%, followed by meat production and processing with 9.2%.

The district is connected by the New Zealand State Highway 1, which only crosses the district in the southwest and by the State Highways 22 , 26 , 27 , 28 and 29 , which all cross the district in different directions.
