With 3575 km² of pure land, the district is the largest district in the Taranaki region. With 26,577 inhabitants in 2013, the district has a population density of 7.4 people per km², which is less than a quarter of the population density of the New Plymouth District .

The South Taranaki District is enclosed by the Tasman Sea to the west and south . In the north the districts of New Plymouth and Stratford border and in the east this is the Whanganui District , which already belongs to the Manawatu-Wanganui region.

The district includes the southwest flank of the 2518  m high Mount Taranaki with the southwest part of the Egmont National Park . The largest city in the district is Hawera with around 11,000 inhabitants, followed by Eltham with just under 2000 inhabitants, Opunake with around 1400 inhabitants and Patea with around 1150 inhabitants.

climate

The district is influenced by westerly winds coming from the Tasman Sea. Summers are moderately warm and winters are mild. The mean summer maximum temperatures are between 20 ° C and 23 ° C in summer and 5 ° C to 9 ° C in winter and the precipitation is between 1000 and 1600 mm distributed over the year. The duration of sunshine amounts to 1900 to 2100 hours per year.

population

politics

administration

The South Taranaki District is in turn divided into five wards , the Hawera Ward with four Councilors , the Egmond Plains Ward with three, the Eltham Ward and Patea ard with two each and the Tangahoe Ward with one Councilor . Together with the Mayor (mayor) they form the District Council (district council). The mayor and the twelve council members are re-elected every three years.

economy

The most important source of income for the district is agriculture, especially milk production and processing. The town of Opunake , which is popular with surfers, is particularly interesting in the district .

Infrastructure

traffic

The South Taranaki District is connected by the New Zealand State Highway 3 , which leads from New Plymouth and Stratford directly to Hawera and then east on the coast to Whanganui . The State Highway 45 connects Hawera with New Plymouth via the detour on the west coast.
