The Horowhenua District is an administrative unit in the Manawatu-Wanganui region in New Zealand . The district council, called Horowhenua District Council , is based in Levin City , as is the district administration.

Geographical location

With 1064 km² of pure land, the district is the smallest district in the Manawatu-Wanganui region. With 30,096 inhabitants in 2013, the district has a population density of 28.3 people per km², making it the district with the highest population density in the Region.

To the west, the natural border of the Horowhenua District formed the coastline to the Tasman Sea . The Manawatu District borders in the north, the urban area of Palmerston North in the northeast , the Tararua District in the east and the Kapiti Coast District in the south , which already belongs to the Wellington region.

The coastal strip of the district is flat, while the hinterland is characterized by the mountain range of the Tararua Range . The largest city in the district is the city of Levin , with around 19,500 inhabitants , followed by Otaki 5600, Foxton with around 2,650 and Shannon with around 1,500 inhabitants.

The mean daytime temperatures are between 20 ° C and 24 ° C in summer and between 3 ° C and 6 ° C in winter, depending on the altitude. The duration of sunshine is around 2000 hours per year near the coast and towards the mountains, decreasing to less than 1700 hours per year. The precipitation is between 800 and 1100 mm per year depending on the location, in the mountains over 2000 mm.

Of the 30,096 inhabitants of the district in 2013, 6486 inhabitants were of Māori origin (21.6%). This means that 1.1% of the country's Māori population lived in the Horowhenua District . The median income for the population in 2013 was NZ $ 21,800  , compared to NZ $ 28,500 national average.

Origin and languages

When asked about ethnic group membership in the 2013 census, 82.4% said they were European, 22.8% said they had Māori roots, 4.8% came from the islands of the Pacific and 3.4 % came from Asia (multiple answers were possible). 13.9% of the population said they were born overseas and 4.9% of the population spoke Māori , 18.9% of the Māori .

The Horowhenua District is divided into four wards , the Levin Ward with five councilors , the Kere Kere Rural Ward and the Waiopehu Rural Ward with two each, and the Miranui Rural Ward with one councilor . Together with the Mayor (mayor) they form the District Council (district council). The mayor and the ten councilors are re-elected every three years.

In 2015, the district had 2,805 companies with a total of 10,018 employees. The dominant economic sectors in 2015 were agriculture, forestry and fishing with a share of 16% and the supply of electricity, gas and water with a share of 14.4%, followed by 9.2% the manufacturing industry, 6.2% the health sector and the retail trade and 6.1% the real estate market.

The district is connected by the New Zealand State Highways 1 , 56 and 57 as well as the North Island Main Trunk Railway , a railway line that connects Auckland with Wellington in the south of the North Island and runs directly through Levin .
