The Clutha District is an administrative unit in the Otago region in New Zealand . The district council, called the Clutha District Council , is based in the city of Balclutha , as is the district administration.

geography

Geographical location

The Clutha District has a total land area of 6335 km², making it the smallest district in the Otago region . At the census in 2013, the district had 16,890 inhabitants, bringing it to a population density of 2.7 inhabitants per km².

The Clutha District is the southernmost district of the Otago region . To the west, the district borders the Southland District and Gore District , both of which belong to the Southland region . In the north the Central Otago District and the urban area of Dunedin City form the border and in the south to east this is the coastline to the Pacific Ocean .

The landscape in the Clutha District is dominated by the plain of the Clutha River , which is the largest river in the district and crosses it from the north in the middle. In the northwest are the up to 1019  m high Blue Mountains and in the south a part of the Catlins , a low mountain range that extends to the coast, determines the landscape.

The largest city in the district is Balclutha with around 3900 inhabitants, followed by Milton with just over 1900 inhabitants. All other places are below 1000 inhabitants.

climate

The district's climate is similar to that of the Central Otago District , with the exception of the southwestern area. The summers are usually dry and warm, the winters more humid and cold. The daytime temperatures in summer are mostly between 18 ° C and 20 ° C. The winters, however, are cold in the northern part and bring minus temperatures in the single-digit range, in the southern part milder between 0 ° C and 3 ° C. The average annual sunshine duration is between 1550 and 1750 hours depending on the location. With the exception of the Catlins region , where rainfall between 1000 and 1500 mm per year is expected, the central and northern parts of the district only have amounts between 400 and 600 mm.

population

Population development

Of the 16,890 inhabitants of the district in 2013, 1605 inhabitants were of Māori origin (9.5%). This means that 0.3% of the country's Māori population lived in the Clutha District . The median income in the population in 2013 was NZ $ 29,900,  compared to NZ $ 28,500 national average.

Origin and languages

When asked about ethnic group membership in the 2013 census, 91.1% said they were European, 10.0% said they had Māori roots, 1.2% came from the islands of the Pacific and 2.0% % came from Asia (multiple answers were possible). 9.0% of the population said they were born overseas. 1.8% of the population spoke Māori as the second most common language after English, among the Māori 12.9%.

politics

administration

The Clutha District is again divided into eight wards , the Balclutha Ward with four Councilors , the Bruce Ward with three, the West Otago Ward with two and the Catlins Ward , the Clinton Ward , the Clutha Valley Ward , the Kaitangata- Matau Ward and the Lawrence - Tuapeka Ward , each with a Councilor . The fourteen Councilors , together with the Mayor, form the District Council and are elected every three years.

economy

In 2012, the district had around 3002 companies that generated gross domestic product (GDP) of NZ $ 932 billion in the same assessment period , an increase of 2.8% over the previous year. The primary economic sector accounted for 40.8% of this with NZ $ 336 million, making it the economically strongest and most important area. Manufacturing followed in second place with NZ $ 220 million and a share of 26.7%.

Infrastructure

Road traffic

The district is connected by the New Zealand State Highway 1 , which , coming from the west of Invercargill and Gore , crosses the district and Balclutha and connects further northeast with Dunedin . The State Highway 8 , however, connects the district with the northern parts of the region Otago . The State Highways 90 and 93 only provide cross connections.

Rail transport

In the southeast of the district, along the coast, runs the railway line of the South Island Main Trunk Railway , which connects Balclutha with Invergarcill and Dunedin and the northern parts of the South Island. However, only goods are transported on this railway line.
