The Tararua District is an administrative unit in New Zealand that largely belongs to the Manawatu-Wanganui region . The district council, called Tararua District Council ( District Council ), has its seat in the city of Dannevirke , as does the district administration.
geography
Geographical location
With 4364 km² of pure land, the district is the third largest district in the Manawatu-Wanganui region. With 16,854 inhabitants in 2013, the district has a population density of 3.9 inhabitants per km², making it the district with the second lowest population density in the Region.
To the west, the Tararua District is bounded by the Horowhenua and Manawatu districts and the urban area of Palmerston North , to the north by the Central Hawke's Bay District , which is already part of the Hawke's Bay region, and to the south by the Masterton District , which is part of the Wellington region. The eastern border of the district forms the coastline to the Pacific Ocean . A small part of the district, which makes up approximately 2% of the total area, is in the Wellington area .
The entire district is characterized by a hilly and mountainous landscape, the highest peaks of which do not exceed 803 m . The three small towns in the district are Dannevirke with around 5500 inhabitants, Pahiatua with around 2550 and Woodville with around 1400 inhabitants.
climate
The average daytime temperatures are between 20 ° C and 24 ° C in summer, depending on the altitude, and between 3 ° C and 6 ° C in winter. The duration of sunshine is around 2000 hours per year near the coast and towards the mountains, decreasing to less than 1800 hours per year. The precipitation is between 1000 and 1500 mm per year depending on the location.
history
Before European settlers came to the area of the district, the Māori tribes of the Rangitāne and Ngāti Kahungunu lived there . Among the first European settlers were thirteen Danish and eight Norwegian families who founded the Dannevirke settlement in 1872, as did Norsewood between 1872 and 1875 .
population
Population development
Of the 16,854 inhabitants of the district in 2013, 3,378 people were of Māori origin (20.0%). This means that 0.6% of the country's Māori population lived in the Tararua District . The median income for the population in 2013 was NZ $ 25,100 , compared to NZ $ 28,500 national average.
Origin and languages
When asked about ethnic group membership in the 2013 census, 85.2% said they were European, 21.2% said they had Māori roots, 1.5% came from the islands of the Pacific and 2.1% % came from Asia (multiple answers were possible). 8.3% of the population said they were born overseas and 4.5% of the population spoke Māori , 18.6% of the Māori .
politics
administration
The Tararua District is in turn divided into two wards , the Northern Ward and the Southern Ward , each with four Councilors (councilors). Together with the Mayor (mayor) they form the District Council (district council). The mayor and the eight council members are re-elected every three years.
economy
Agriculture is the most dominant branch of industry in the district, with the east of the district living more on sheep and cattle breeding and the west on dairy farming, which, if one compares the years from 1996 to 2002, has increased following the national trend. A modest textile industry and forestry can also be found in the region. In the district there is also the Tararua Wind Farm , which is the largest wind farm in New Zealand with 134 turbines and a capacity of 161 megawatts of electricity as of 2016 . The plant's average annual electricity generation is around 620,000 megawatt hours .
Since 2011, investigations and drilling for oil have been carried out in the catchment area of the entire east coast of the North Island (land and offshore). Since then, 17 and 19 km east of Dannevirke , oil has been drilled to a depth of 2000 m.
Infrastructure
traffic
The district is connected by the New Zealand State Highway 2 , which crosses the district in a north-south direction, and State Highway 3 , which branches off from Woodville to the west to Palmerston North .
