The Taupo District is an administrative unit in New Zealand that is largely part of the Waikato region . The district council, called the Taupo District Council , has its seat in Taupo City , as does the district administration.

geography

Geographical location

The district is the largest district in the Waikato region with 6334 km² of pure land . With 32,907 inhabitants counted in 2013, the district has a population density of 5.2 inhabitants per km², making it the district with the third lowest population density in the region.

The Taupo District spans four regions in the country. Most of the district is in the Waikato region, while a smaller northeastern area to the west belongs to the Bay of Plenty region and a second, similarly large part in the southeast belongs to the Hawke's Bay region. A very small corner of the Manawatu-Wanganui region protrudes into the southwest into the Taupo District .

The districts of Otorohanga , Waitomo and Ruapehu border to the west, the latter also to the south. In the north this is done by the districts of South Waikato and Rotorua Lakes , in the northeast by the Whakatāne District and in the southeast by the districts of Hastings and Rangitikei .

Large parts of the Taupo District lie in a landscape commonly referred to as the Central Volcanic Plateau , with the entire district geologically belonging to the Taupo Volcanic Zone . The Lake Taupo , lying in the middle of the district, as determined by its size of 622 square kilometers is not the landscape of the district, but is also the largest lake in New Zealand. The mountains surrounding the lake form the crater rim of what was once the largest volcano in the country, the Taupo .

The Waikato River , known as the longest river in New Zealand, has its source as the Upper Waikato Stream on the east side of Mount Ruapehu , flows a little later as the Togariro River into Lake Taupo and then becomes the only one out of the lake to become the Waikato River .

The two cities of Taupo and Turangi are by far the largest settlements in the district with around 21,300 and 3,250 inhabitants.

climate

The climatic conditions in the Taupo District couldn't be more different. While in the southern part, which is characterized by the volcanoes Mount Ruapehu , Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro as well as the Rangipo Desert , annual precipitation amounts of over 2000 mm can be expected, north and east of Lake Taupo only amounts between 1000 and 1100 mm are to be found. The daytime temperatures in summer can vary greatly depending on the altitude. In the area around Lake Taupo , daytime temperatures are between 21 ° C and 33 ° C in summer and between 5 ° C and 20 ° C in winter. Frosts are more common. The number of hours of sunshine per year in the north-east of the district is a little under 2000 hours and rapidly decreases in the south-west to 1700 hours.

population

Population development

Of the district's 32,907 residents, 9030 residents were of Māori origin in 2013 (27.4%). This means that 1.5% of the country's Māori population lived in the Taupo District . The median income for the population in 2013 was NZ $ 28,200,  compared to NZ $ 28,500 national average.

Origin and languages

When asked about ethnic group membership in the 2013 census, 76.9% said they were European, 29.0% said they had Māori roots, 2.7% came from the islands of the Pacific region and 3.5% came from Asia (multiple answers were possible). 15.5% of the population said they were born overseas and 8.0% of the population spoke Māori , 25.5% of the Māori .

politics

administration

The Taupo District is again divided into three wards , the Taupo-Kaingaroa Ward with six Councilors (council members), the Turangi-Tongariro Ward with two and the Mangakino-Pouakani with one. Together with the Mayor (mayor) they form the District Council (district council). The mayor and the nine council members are re-elected every three years.

Town twinning

The Taupo District has three city partnerships:

economy

Geothermal energy , forestry, agriculture, aquaculture and tourism are among the most important economic sectors in the district . In order to develop the branches of the economy, various companies were founded.

Infrastructure

traffic

The Taupo District is connected by the New Zealand State Highways 1 and 32 , both of which cross the district in a north-south direction and the SH1 to the east and the SH32 to the west of Lake Taupo . In the north of the district, State Highway 30 connects to the west, east of State Highway 5 towards Hawke's Bay and in the south, State Highways 46 and 47 branch off to the southwest.
