The Waikato District is one for Region Waikato counting management unit in New Zealand . The district council, called Waikato District Council ( District Council ), is based in the city of Ngāruawāhia , as is the district administration.

Geographical location
The Waikato District is the northwesternmost district in the Waikato region and, with 4405 km² of pure land, is the second largest district in the region after the Taupo District . With 63,381 inhabitants in 2013, the district has a population density of 14.4 inhabitants per km² .
The district is bounded to the west by the Tasman Sea . In the north it meets the area of the Auckland Council and an eastern coastal strip is in contact with the Firth of Thames . The eastern district border, which runs further south, passes the Hauraki District and the Matamata-Piako District . To the south the district borders on the Otorohanga District and the Waipa District . The city of Hamilton , as an independent Territorial Authority , lies within the Waikato District .
The largest cities in the district are Huntly with over 7000 and Ngāruawāhia with over 4000 inhabitants, apart from Hamilton . Other places with more than 1000 inhabitants are Raglan with 3100 and Te Kauwhata with almost 1100 inhabitants.
climate
The district is protected by mountainous landscapes from the south and east. Summers are warm and dry, winters can be frosty. The average temperatures are between 12 ° C and 23 ° C in summer, with daytime temperatures between 21 ° C and 26 ° C. Winter temperatures average between 5 ° C and 14 ° C and between 10 ° C and 14 ° C throughout the day. The duration of sunshine is given for most places with 2000 to 2100 hours as an annual average and the precipitation over the year with 600 to 1600 mm depending on the location.
history
The settlement of the region by the Māori was similar to that in all northern regions of the North Island . But in the 1850s the Kīngitanga movement emerged among the Māori , who wanted to establish their own kingdom in New Zealand, similar to that of the British. In April 1857 Pōtatau Te Wherowhero was finally elected King of the Māori , with the seat in Ngāruawāhia in the Waikato District .

In 2013, 14,403 of the district's 63,381 inhabitants were of Māori origin (22.7%). This means that 2.4% of the country's Māori population lived in the Waikato District . The median income for the population in 2013 was NZ $ 30,500 compared to NZ $ 28,500 national average.
Origin and languages
When asked about ethnic group membership in the 2013 census, 79.1% said they were European, 24.2% said they had Māori roots, 3.5% came from the islands of the Pacific and 3.8% came from Asia (multiple answers were possible). 14.4% of the population said they were born overseas and 7.2% of the population spoke Māori , of the Māori 27.6%.

The Waikato District itself is divided into thirteen wards . Each ward is represented by an elected Councilor who, together with the Mayor, form the District Council . The mayor and the thirteen councilors are re-elected every three years.
economy
In 2015, the district had 8,517 companies with a total of 19,834 employees. The district's gross domestic product (GDP) in the same period was NZ $ 2.365 billion. On the basis of this, agriculture, forestry and fishing had a share of 23.5% of GDP, followed by mining with 13.7%, electricity, gas, water, waste disposal with 8.4% and manufacturing Commercial with 7.4%.

The district is connected by the New Zealand State Highway 1 , which runs from north to south across the district and leads through Hamilton . The State Highway 1B branches at Taupiri and leads southeast on to Cambridge . Other highways that run through the district are State Highways 2 , 23 , 26 , 27, and 39 .
