Te Kauwhata is a place in the Waikato District of the Waikato regionon the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The place is located around 44 km north-northwest of Hamilton and around 70 km south-southeast of downtown Auckland on the north-west bank of the 34 km² large Lake Waikare . The Waikato River flows past around 3.5 km to the southwest and a humid plain extends to the Whangamarino River to the north . Te Kauwhata is about 2 km southwest of the connection to the New Zealand State Highway 1 and the North Island Main Trunk Railway passes the place in its western half.
history
Te Kauwhata was originally known as Wairangi and developed when the railroad was built through the settlement in the late 1870s. In 1886, an experimental plantation with exotic trees was started in the place and six years later with a government research station. The Te Kauwhata Viticultural Research Station was concerned with viticulture and was the birthplace of New Zealand's wine industry. Here experiments were carried out with the varieties Syrah , Chardonnay , Pinot Noir , Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling , with which five gold medals have already been won.

In the 2013 census, the town had 1,473 inhabitants, 23.4% more than in the 2006 census.
economy
The place and its surroundings live primarily from agriculture, vegetables, fruit and wine growing. In agriculture, the spectrum ranges from dairy farming to sheep and cattle breeding to the rearing of red deer, alpaca sheep and goats.
