The lake waikare is the largest of several shallow lakes in the flood plain on the upper reaches of the Waikato River in the Waikato District on the North Island of New Zealand . It is east of Te Kauwhata , 40 km north of Hamilton . The place Rangiriri located in close proximity to the lake on the Waikato River.
It has an area of 34 km² and a water depth of less than 2 m. From the west side a large headland extends into the lake.
The shallow lake formed by the river has poor water quality due to the fertilizer input from the surrounding agriculture.
The New Zealand State Highway 1 runs near the west bank .
The lake is the namesake of the titanium moon lake Waikare Lacus .
