Since the territory of San Marino is completely surrounded by Italian territory, defense in the event of war is guaranteed by Italy. However, to symbolize independence, the state maintains a small army - the San Marino Armed Forces (Italian: Forze Armate Sammarinesi ).

structure

The armed forces are divided into:

  • Comando Superiore delle Milizie ( High Command )
  • Compagnia Uniformata delle Milizie (Regular Armed Forces / Militia Unit ): Participates in the official ceremonies and provides support with the security service on special occasions.
  • Guardia del Consiglio / Guardia d'Onore (Guard of the Grand Council / Honor Guard ): Bodyguards of the Capitani Reggenti and the Parliament as well as honorary service on national holidays . Military unit with predominantly representative tasks.

Conscription

There is no compulsory military service , but all citizens between the ages of 18 and 60 can be called up in an emergency.

Military spending

The total expenditure on defense totaled approximately 7,775,000 in 2001 dollars . In 2012, the total spend was $ 10.7 million.
