The Royal Gibraltar Regiment is a light infantry battalion formed in 1958. Originally a unit of the Territorial Army, it was incorporated into the Regular Army after a partial withdrawal of British troops in 1991.

The battalion is divided into Thomson's Battery (HQ plus an artillery squad ) and three companies , with the G and I companies belonging to the Regular Army, while the B company is provided by the Territorial Army.

In 1999 the unit was given the status of a “royal regiment”, and in March 2001 the regiment carried out guard duty at Buckingham Palace for the first time . It is subordinate to the Queen's Division .
