The Republic of Moldova has a small armed force with 6,750 soldiers. In 2006 the country spent the equivalent of US $ 9.5 million on its defense.
There is general conscription . The military service lasts twelve months. In addition to the active soldiers, 66,000 reservists are available.
The military is divided into army (5710 members, including 4000 conscripts) and air forces (1040 members), naval units are not available due to the country's inland location .
The country participates in the UNOCI , UNMIK , UNMIL and UNMISS missions of the United Nations .

Air Force
The air force consists of a mixed squadron and an anti-aircraft brigade. There are three Antonov An-72s , ten Antonov An-2s and eleven Mil Mi-8s on the aircraft.

The Moldovan Ministry of the Interior has a border protection force with 2,400 members, as well as internal troops with 2,500 members, including the special unit OPON, which comprises 899 members.
From the remnants of the 14th Guard Army of the former Soviet Army , Russia still has a motorized rifle brigade and an anti-aircraft regiment in Transnistria . Weapon systems of the types SA-3 and SA-5 are available for air defense . The Russian armed forces in Transnistria were significantly reduced in 1994.
However, Transnistria has also built up its own armed forces .
