Public safety in Monaco

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The public safety in Monaco is ensured by a police and two small military units . Monaco is one of the safest countries in the world.

crime

Monaco is the country with the lowest crime rate in the world. This is due, among other things, to the heavy police presence and extensive video surveillance . There are around 60 public security cameras in all parts of the principality that are connected to the police headquarters; In addition, there is a significantly higher number of privately installed surveillance cameras and around 500 private security staff. This is one of the reasons why the principality is often accused of being a surveillance state .

police

The internal security is through a 517-strong police force (Police) guaranteed. Measured against the 36,000 inhabitants, Monaco has the highest per capita police presence in the world.

The police are subordinate to the Department of Public Security (Direction de la Sûreté Publique) of the Ministry of the Interior and are divided into a criminal police , which works with Interpol , a city police (largest unit, provides the uniformed forces), an administrative unit and a sea and air unit. It is equipped with three patrol boats, a Bell 206 and numerous police cars . In Monaco, unlike in many other countries, the police are responsible for border protection.

military

Most of the external defense is taken over by France , which signed a protectorate treaty with Monaco in 1861 . Nevertheless, the principality maintains some smaller military units (Force Publique) , which are described below. Both are subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior and are integrated into the ORMOS Red Plan (an evacuation plan for Monaco). With a total of 255 soldiers , Monaco has the third smallest armed force in the world.

Corps des Sapeurs-Pompiers

The Corps des Sapeurs-Pompiers (German fire brigade corps ) has 135 members (10 officers , 26 NCOs , 99 crew ranks ) and is mainly active as a fire brigade and is also responsible for civil defense. Similar to France, the fire brigade in Monaco is organized militarily and is therefore viewed as a part of the armed forces (see also Brigade de sapeurs-pompiers de Paris ).

The units are stationed in La Condamine and Fontvieille and are instructed in the use of firearms in addition to their civilian tasks . All officers in the corps were trained by the French fire service.

Compagnie des Carabiniers du Prince

The Compagnie des Carabiniers du Prince (German Fürstliche Karabinierskompanie ) is a 116 man (3 officers, 15 NCOs, 98 carabiniers) strong paramilitary unit, which is mainly responsible for the personal protection of the prince and his family as well as the prince's palace . It also performs protocol tasks on special occasions and state receptions . The company also includes the Fanfare de la Compagnie des Carabiniers du Prince (26 musicians under the command of a Maréchal des Logis ), as well as a motorcycle squadron, a special unit , a medical unit and a diving unit . A total of 14 civilian employees work for the Carabiniers.

The company was founded in 1817 by Prince Honoré IV to protect himself and his family. It is equipped with modern weapons, such as the M16A2 rifle or 9 mm Glock 17 pistols. All officers previously served in the French army . The princely palace is constantly guarded by two carabiniers who change the guard every day at 11:55 a.m.

Ranks

The ranks of the above military units are shown below. The shoulder flaps shown here are those of the Carabiniers - those of the Sapeurs-Pompiers are highlighted in red instead of black. It should also be noted that due to the low strength of the units, some ranks may also be vacant.
