Monaco had been a rulership since 969 , was given sovereignty in 1441 and was called a principality since 1633 at the latest .

Monaco was ruled by the Grimaldi family from 1275 (with interruptions) until 1731, by the Goyon-Grimaldi family since 1731 and by the Grimaldi-Valentinois family since 1949 .

Even if the previous Grimaldi were sometimes referred to as “Prince” or “Prince” out of courtesy, they did not officially have this title. Honoré II used the title “Prince and Lord” for the first time in his correspondence with the Spaniards from around 1612, but it was not until 1633 that the court in Madrid recognized the title of prince.
