from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man ( English Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man , Manx Lhiass-chiannoort Vannin ) is the agent of the Lord of Mann , currently Elizabeth II , on the Isle of Man .

Lieutenant Governor's Standard

He has the authority to issue the Royal Assent to laws and is addressed as "Your Excellency". More recently, the lieutenant governor has always been a former diplomat or senior member of the army. So far no local Manx has held the office, although Erste Deemster (as deputy lieutenant governors ex officio ) exercised the same functions in the transition period between two lieutenant governors.

history

Once the lieutenant governor exercised all judicial, financial and executive powers, and by 1900 had more power over his territory than any other representative in the Commonwealth . However, he lost his position as head of the judiciary, as President of the House of Lords in 1980 and finally as President of Tynwald in 1990 . Today the vice governor mainly fulfills formal and representative tasks, but contributes significantly to life on the island through his charitable work.

In October 2005 the Tynwald wanted to change the title of Lieutenant Governor to Barrantagh y Chrooin to Manx and Crown Commissioner in English ( Crown Commissioner ). The proposal was sent to the Department of Constitutional Affairs for forwarding to the Lord of Mann Elizabeth II . In April 2006, the Tynwald withdrew its own proposal, including a request for royal approval, after severe public criticism. The office therefore retained the previous title.
