Augustin (Monaco)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Augustine of Monaco (* 1482 ; † April 14, 1532 in Monaco ) from the Grimaldi family was Bishop of Grasse and from 1523 to 1532 Lord of Monaco.

Life

Augustin Grimaldi was the fifth son of Lambert von Monaco and Claudine Grimaldi . He became abbot of Lérins monastery in 1501 and bishop of Grasse in 1505, and from 1525 also bishop of Mallorca. At the beginning of his reign, Augustine's brother Lucien of Monaco had stipulated that in the event of his absence Augustine should take over the official business. As early as 1507 Augustin took over the administration of Monaco for the first time, while Lucien was in prison in Milan . Augustine proved to be very prudent and prevented the attempt of the French king Louis XII. To take over Monaco.

After Lucien's violent death on August 22, 1523, Augustine took over the reign in Monaco instead of Honoré I , who was only one year old , the son and heir of Lucien. His first goal in the new office was to punish his brother's opponents. Initially, however, he was not very successful. Andrea Doria continued to threaten Monaco. Barthélémy, Lucien's murderer, seeks reconciliation with Augustine, who, however, does not want to forgive him. One day Barthélémy is found with a broken skull in the castle in Penna. Due to his disputes with France, Augustin placed Monaco in 1525 under the protectorate of Charles I of Spain , who had elevated him to the rank of imperial prince on June 27, 1524.

Augustine of Monaco died on April 14, 1532 in an unknown manner. Ten-year-old Honoré I became his heir , for whom Etienne Grimaldi initially took over the business of government.
