The 152-mm howitzer M1955 or D-20 ( Russian 152-мм пушка-гаубица Д-20 обр. 1955 г. ) is a 152.4-mm howitzer that entered service in the Soviet Union from 1947 . It became known in the West as M1955 since it was first observed in 1955. A Chinese version is designated as Type 66 , a Yugoslav version as M84 NORA-A .

history

The development of the howitzer began shortly after the end of the Second World War in the office of Fyodor Fyodorovich Petrov . The weapon was intended to replace the older D-1 and ML-20 . Because the gun combined the properties of a howitzer (large elevation angle) and a cannon (high muzzle velocity and barrel length in calibers), it was classified as a cannon howitzer. It was the first in the range of calibers over 150 mm to have a semi-automatic loading mechanism.

The howitzer has been exported to over 13 countries and built under license in at least two (China and Yugoslavia). The self-propelled gun 2S3 is equipped with a D-20 as main armament.
