The 2S3 self-propelled gun was developed in the Soviet Union in the late 1960s and went into series production in 1971. In the armies of the WVO she received the designations 2S3 and Akazija ( Russian Акация , German: Acacia ). It was first known in the West as the M1973 since it was first sighted in 1973.

technology

The self-propelled howitzer uses a GM series undercarriage, known as the Object 123 , and has a classic design with its support roller drive and rear turret. The gun is the same as in the D-20 cannon howitzer. It has a smoke extractor and fires ammunition that has to be loaded separately. The maximum firing range with HE shells is 17.5 km. Twelve rounds can be stored in a carousel magazine in the turret, and a total of 46 grenades and cartridges are stored in the fighting area, which can be loaded by a semi-automatic loading and feeding device. There is also the option of reloading via a small hatch at the rear of the self-propelled gun.

Mostly they are used in the regimental artillery groups and divisional artillery groups.
