The Russian marine infantry ( Russian Морская пехота России / "Morskaja pechota Rossii") is one of the oldest units of the Russian armed forces . Their soldiers have been involved in the important conflicts between Russia and the Soviet Union since the Napoleonic Wars . The unit is intended for security tasks and amphibious warfare .

The Russian marine infantry was born on November 16 . / November 27th 1705 greg. under Peter I founded. November 27th has been celebrated as "Marine Infantry Day" since 1995.

Until 1900 it mainly had the task of fighting pirates and securing the ships. There was also training for landing companies. Until then, their strength fluctuated. After the Russo-Japanese War 1904/05 , the marines were increased to two brigades . The history of the Imperial Russian Navy and its marine infantry then ended with the October Revolution and the Civil War . It was not until 1940 that a marine infantry brigade was set up again in the Baltic Red Banner Fleet of the now Soviet Navy . During the Second World War , the marine infantry was greatly expanded. Members of the marine infantry were deployed in the defense of Odessa , Moscow , Sevastopol , Kerch , Novorossiysk , Leningrad and Stalingrad , among others . In 1947 the marine infantry was subordinated to the Coastal Defense Forces and dissolved as a branch in the mid-1950s. In the early 1960s, the marine infantry was reorganized. In 1976 their strength was estimated at 14,500 men. The equipment included more than 80 landing craft , including several air cushion boats of the Aist and Pomornik classes , as well as two dock landing ships of the Ivan Rogow class .

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , the marine infantry was incorporated into the Russian Navy . Their strength is given in the 2000s with 9500 men. Of equipment it has in addition to about 160 battle tanks also spyware , rifle and armored personnel carriers armored . The Russian marine infantry was used in the two Chechen wars ( 1994/96 and from 1999/2000 ).

During the Crimean crisis in 2014, the Russian government used marines to occupy strategic points in Crimea. On February 24, members of the 810th Independent Marine Infantry Brigade of the Black Sea Fleet marched in Sevastopol with some armored personnel carriers in the city center, thereby violating the existing stationing agreements.
