Project 1174 , with the code name "Nossorog" ( Russian Носорог ; German for rhinoceros , NATO designation: Ivan-Rogov-Class ), was a class of large landing and docking ships of the Soviet Union that was developed during the Cold War .

use

Helicopter landing platform and open hangar door on the superstructure, including the rear loading ramp on the fuselage.

Project 1174 was a class of amphibious dockships and offered accommodation for either a reinforced battalion of the marine infantry (up to 500 men and their armored personnel carriers plus ten PT-76 floating tanks) or a tank battalion of the Russian marine infantry . Each ship carried up to four Kamow Ka-25 or Ka-29 combat and transport helicopters in a hangar inside the main superstructure, which had landing platforms in the front and rear, with access from the front via a ramp and from the rear via the large hangar doors . There was also a bow ramp between outward opening gates intended for use by amphibious vehicles. There was a floodable dock shaft at the stern. This was 79 meters long and 13 meters wide at the dock shaft gate. It was possible to record three air-cushion boats of Project 1206 ( Lebed class) or landing craft of Project 1176 .

Armament

The armament was aimed at anti - aircraft defense , with four launchers for Strela-3 missiles and the four 30-mm AK-630 cannons allowing short-range defense , while a 4K33 Osa-M double starter on the deck in front of the deck structure for defense against air targets was laid out in the middle distance. The 122 mm Grad M rocket launcher could provide fire protection for an amphibious landing. The 76 mm L / 59 AK-726 gun turret could fire at medium-range sea and land targets.

Payload

Trucks, cars and BMP-1 armored personnel carriers on the upper deck of the Ivan Rogow (1986).

units

Three ships were built in Kaliningrad between 1976 and 1990 . All were named after heroes of the Soviet Union from WWII :

  • Ivan Rogow, keel laid in 1976, launched 1978, decommissioned 1996
  • Aleksander Nikolajew, keel laid in 1980, launched in 1982, decommissioned in 1997
  • Mitrofan Moskalenko, keel laid in 1989, launched in 1990, decommissioned in 2012, broken up in Murmansk in 2019.
