Project 1176 , with the code name "Akula" (Russian "Акула" for " Hai "; NATO designation: Ondatra class ), is a class of small landing craft of the Soviet Navy , which was developed during the Cold War and continued until 2009 by the Russian Federation was built.
construction
Project 1176 has a 13.7 × 3.9 meter transport deck that takes up 2/3 of the front boat length and can be entered or exited via a ramp at the bow. Behind it there is a small bridge structure with a steering position and underneath the engine room with two diesel engines.
Although the boats can transport a single battle tank , they are primarily intended for the transport of soldiers and thus belong to the same group as the American-British Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel or “LCVP” for short from World War II .
The boats could also be used from the large DropShips of Project 1174 to put troops, cargo and vehicles ashore.
units
25 vehicles from Project 1176 were built by four shipyards between 1971 and 2009. The vehicles were given numbers rather than names and the prefix “D” (Russian “д”). One boat was handed over to Ukraine , two to Georgia and one to Yemen . In 2008, 19 boats were decommissioned and some were broken off.
