Project 1265 , code name: Jachont ( Russian "Яхонт" for Rubin , NATO designation: "Sonya class") was a class of mine clearance vessels of the Soviet Navy that was developed to search for sea mines in the coastal apron. 81 ships were built by the Soviet Union for own and friendly naval forces from 1971.
description
Hull and sonar
Project 1265 was based on the small series ships from Project 1252 . A hull made of fiberglass , as in project 1252, could not be built at the two shipyards with the required hull size, so they went back to hulls made of wood and glued five layers of ash and oak wood on frames made of an aluminum alloy for the hull . Finally, the hull was covered with a layer of fiberglass.
To search for underwater contacts, a dome with an MG-79 and an MG-89 sonar was installed under the hull .
Armament
The ships were armed with a 30 mm L / 63 AK-230 turret on the forecastle and a 25 mm L / 70 2M-3 twin automatic cannon on the aft. On some ships, two 30 mm L / 63 AK-306 were installed in place of the 2M-3 and Ak-230 , the design is called Project 12650. Anti-aircraft missiles of the Strela-3 type could be used by two launch devices against targets in the vicinity.
Sea mines and depth charges could also be carried.
export
In addition to Project 1265 and Project 12650, the Project 1265E variant was built for export. These ships carried the MG-35 system in addition to the MG-89 sonar.
Whereabouts
81 ships of Project 1265 were built in the shipyards in Petrozavodsk and Vladivostok until 1991. Most of them served in the Soviet Navy and later in the Russian Navy. 40 of the Russian ships had been decommissioned by 2007. 22 ships were given to other countries: Azerbaijan received three ships, Bulgaria four, Vietnam four, Cuba four, Syria two, Ukraine two and Ethiopia one.
