Project 1259 , code name: Malachite ( Russian Корунд , NATO designation: "Olya class"), was a class of small mine clearance boats of the Soviet Navy that was developed to search for sea mines in rivers. 11 boats were built by the Soviet Union from 1973 and Bulgaria from 1990.
description
Hull and sonar
Project 1259 was a scaled-down version of Project 1258 , the boats of which were optimized for use in rivers by reducing weight and thus draft. The double hull boats were made of wood or fiberglass with a structure made of an aluminum alloy .
The hull itself did not have a sonar system to search for underwater contacts, so the crew had to use a crane to deploy appropriate search drones with cameras or a towing sonar, which sent their data via cables to the operations center in the hull.
Armament
The boats were armed with a twin automatic cannon 25 mm L / 70 2M-3 on the forecastle. The armament of the Bulgarian boats of the class was an NSW twin machine gun on the foredeck.
Whereabouts
Of 7 boats built for the Soviet Union, all were withdrawn by 1997. Four boats were built in Bulgaria from 1990 to 1991 for its own navy as project 1259.2, three of which were decommissioned in 2014.
