Auxiliary ships are ships in the service of a navy that are not used for direct combat operations, but provide logistical support for the combat units. This essentially includes supply ships of all kinds, such as tankers , but also tugs and port service and special vehicles.

Auxiliary ships can carry light armament. They are not always militarily manned, some have civilian occupations or a mixture of both variants.

Unlike combat ships, civil auxiliary ships are not included in the list of warships ; As a sign of their status, in many countries they fly a special flag instead of the flag of the naval forces . In the case of the German Navy , this is the federal service flag .
