Lists on the subject |
The NSW ( Russian НСВ ; abbreviation for Russian Никитина-Соколова-Волкова ) is a super -heavy machine gun that was built in the Soviet Union . The abbreviation stands for the surnames of the three designers involved: Grigori Ivanovich Nikitin, Yuri Mikhailovich Sokolov and Vladimir Ivanovich Wolkow. In the Russian armed forces it was replaced by the cord after 1991 .
development
Towards the end of the 1960s, the leadership of the armed forces of the USSR was looking for a replacement for the large-caliber MG DSchK , which was already three decades old at that time. The order to develop a new model was given to the designers in 1969. The requirement was to design a lighter and more manageable weapon. The production effort should also be as low as possible.
technology
The NSW works as a gas pressure charger. The air cooling of the MG forces that after 100 rounds of continuous fire the barrel has to cool down or be replaced. The weapon is locked to prevent uncontrolled ignition of ammunition in the cartridge chamber ( cook off ). It uses the same ammunition as the previous model, which is supplied with a metal endurance belt. The NSW has a tripod and a telescopic sight and can be used as a rifle weapon. The NSWT (T for tankowoi, tanks) was specially designed for use as an on- board weapon on armored vehicles and can be triggered electrically. It served as a turret weapon on tanks such as the T-64 , T-72, and T-80 , to name a few.
