Raglan is a place in the Waikato District of the Waikato Regionon the North Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The place was named in honor of Fitzroy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan , who was in command of the British troops in the Crimean War (1855-1856). The Maori name of the place was previously Whaingaroa .

geography

The place is located around 35 km west of Hamilton , around 2.5 km inland at Raglan Harbor ( Whāingaroa ), which gives the place access to the Tasman Sea . The Opotoru River, which comes from the south, flows west of the town into Raglan Harbor and around 9 km southwest of the town rises the 756  m high Mount Karioi , an extinct former volcano.

In the 2013 census, the town had 2,736 inhabitants, 3.6% more than in the 2006 census.

Road traffic

Raglan can be reached via New Zealand State Highway 23 , which connects the place directly with Hamilton in the east and New Zealand State Highway 3 .

Air traffic

The place has a small airfield with a grass runway on a headland in the western part. Small single-engine aircraft can take off and land from here.

Shipping

The place has a landing stage at its headland protruding into Whāingaroa Harbor .

Sports

Around 3 to 4 km west of the town there are some bays where particularly long waves occur, which are particularly suitable for surfing . The most famous surfing areas are Manu Bay , Whale Bay and Indicators Bay as well as Ngarunui Beach . One of the first surf films, The Endless Summer , was shot partly in raglan.
