Upper Hutt , official name: Upper Hutt City , on Māori Orongomai , is a city and at the same time an independent Territorial Authority (local authority) in the Wellington regionin the south of the North Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The town of Upper Hutt got its name in memory of Sir William Hutt , who was the director of the New Zealand Company , on whose behalf the naturalist and geologist Ernst Dieffenbach explored the valley of the Te-Awa-Kairangi , later called Hutt River , for settlement purposes in 1839 .

Upper Hutt City is located at the southern end of the North Island, around 30 km northeast of Wellington City . The city and has a pure land area of 540 square kilometers belonged to the Census in 2013, 40,179 inhabitants. This makes Upper Hutt City the largest of the four independent cities in the Wellington region in terms of area, but is also the city with the lowest population density with 74.4 inhabitants per km².

In the north of the city borders the Kapiti Coast District . To the east lies the South Wairarapa District , to the south the city of Hutt City and to the west Porirua City . The city extends in a south-westerly direction along the Hutt River and is fringed by the northern part of the Remutaka Range , which ends east of the city and the southwestern extension of the Tararua Range , which is northwest of the city. The New Zealand State Highway 2 , which comes from the northeast to Wellington , runs through the city .

history

The valley in which the city is located was originally settled by the Māori tribe of the Ngāti Ira , but their tribe was decimated by the musket wars of the 1830s.

The first settlers came in 1840, but it was not until 1860 that settlement progressed on a larger scale. When Hutt County was founded in 1877 , Upper Hutt was still a part of it. On April 24, 1908 Upper Hutt got its own city council and on February 26, 1926 the status of a borough was awarded. 40 years later, the city had grown so much that on May 28, 1966 it was given city status. In 1973, 1988 and for the administrative reform in 1989, the city was assigned additional areas.

Population development

Of the 40,179 inhabitants of the city in 2013, 5337 inhabitants were of Māori origin (13.3%). This means that 0.9% of the country's Māori population lived in the city. The median income for the population in 2013 was NZ $ 32,000  , compared to NZ $ 28,500 national average.

Origin and languages

When asked about ethnic group membership in the 2013 census, 84.3% said they were European, 14.0% said they had Māori roots, 4.9% came from the islands of the Pacific and 6 , 0% came from Asia (multiple answers were possible). 20.7% of the population said they were born overseas and 3.2% of the population spoke Māori , 16.4% among the Māori .

Upper Hutt City is not divided into wards . Ten Councilors (council members) together with the Mayor (mayor) form the City Council (City Council), which is called the Upper Hutt City Council . The mayor and council members are re-elected every three years. Wayne Guppy has been mayor since 2001.
