The Remutaka Range , called Rimutaka Range until August 2017 , is a mountain range in the southern part of the North Island of New Zealand , which runs parallel to the coastline for around 50 km between Upper Hutt and the coast to Cook Strait . The widest area of the ridge is about 40 km.
The mountains of the Remutaka Range are the southernmost of the North Island. In the west the ridge is bounded by the Hutt Valley and Wellington Harbor , in the south by the Cook Strait , in the east by the Ruamahanga River and Lake Wairarapa and in the north in the connection between Upper Hut and Featherston by the Tararua Range .
The highest point of the Remutaka Range is Mount Matthews with a height of 940 m . The Mount Clime , with its 831 m height is an important weather and wind protection from the strong southerly winds and concise part of of Wellington from visible skyline of the mountain range.
Remutaka Forest Park
Part of Remutaka range is the 22,000 hectare large Remutaka Forest Park ingested. This park is a popular recreational and hiking area , especially for the people of Wellington . Maintained by the Department of Conservation , the park has numerous popular hiking trails.

The Māori used the Remutaka Range as a habitat and source of food early on. Numerous sites still suggest earlier Māori settlements .
Railway line over the Remutaka Range
In 1878, a railway line was built between Upper Hutt and Featherston through the Hutt Valley and on a section up to the crest of the Remutaka Range , which brought the train over the mountains here using Fellscher Mittelschiene in the track. In 1955, this route was given up in favor of a railway tunnel. The former embankment is now a particularly popular route for mountain bike tours.
earthquake
In 1855, the Remutaka Range was the center of the heaviest earthquake recorded and recorded in New Zealand to date, which would go down in the history of the country as the Wairarapa earthquake . The earthquake with a magnitude of 8.2 on the Richter scale caused the terrain to rise by up to just over 6 meters in some cases, as well as several tsunamis on the surrounding coastal areas and in Wellington Harbor .
