Mount Matthews is the highest peak of the Remutaka Range , a mountain range east of the city of Wellington on the North Island of New Zealand in the Wellington region .
Mount Matthews extends to a height of 940 meters above sea level and is not worth mentioning because of its height, but because of the aspect of being the highest visible peak in the vicinity of Wellington, the capital of New Zealand.
The mountain peak reaches up over the wooded bushland and can be climbed in one day without special mountaineering equipment, but it is a strenuous and steep climb, so that a full day is necessary for the ascent from the foot of the mountain range. Access to the mountain is possible from Wairarapa on the east side of the Rimutaka Range or from the Orongorongo River , which divides the range from northeast to southwest at its southern end.
