Carrière

Begonia corallina , sometimes also referred to as coral begonia or coral red begonia , is a species of plant thatis classifiedin the Gaerdtia section within the genus Begonia or Schiefblatt ( Begonia ) from the family of the Schiefblattgewächse or Begonia family (Begoniaceae). The home is Brazil .

description

They are evergreen , perennial herbaceous plants that reach heights of growth of 2 meters. The leaves are asymmetrical , as with all begonias, hence the German name Schiefblatt.

They are single sexed ( monoecious ). In a hanging inflorescence , it is an umbel, there are either only male or only female flowers. There are five petals. This species is day-neutral (neither short nor long-day plant ) and can therefore bloom all year round. The ovary is subordinate.

There are fruit capsules made with very tiny seeds.

use

There are a number of hybrids (they are also known as Begonia Corallina hybrids or B. Corallina group) in which this species is a parent. They are all very suitable as house plants . They bloom easily and their leaves are decorative. These varieties are also easy to care for for hydroponics and in winter gardens. They belong to the group of bush begonias. There are white, pink and red flowering varieties. Most of the leaves have whitish spots on the smooth leaves, this varies depending on the variety. One variety has been offered under the trade name 'Tamaja' or 'Tamaya' (it is said to be a hybrid of B. corallina hybrids with B. albopicta and it is not a variety name, but a trademark) as small trunks. They can be easily propagated by cuttings. They used to belong in almost every apartment or stairwell.

Varieties (selection)

  • 'Luzerna'
  • 'President Carnot'

Diseases

They are not often attacked by pests or fungal diseases. However, the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris , which can attack the leaves of all species of begonia, is dangerous .
