Career

Tamás Gáspár comes from Budapest and started wrestling at the age of six. He made good progress at Ferencváros Budapest , a top Hungarian club, was one of the best wrestlers in the world in the youth and junior division and won medals at international junior world and European championships in 1979 and 1980. From 1979 the 1.87 m tall athlete was also used in the seniors, but first had to recognize that the way to the top is tough there. But he made the leap to the top, because he became European champion in 1984 and world champion in 1986 in the Greco-Roman style, the style to which he devoted himself exclusively. Because of the Olympic boycott of the Eastern Bloc countries, he could not take part in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . At this point he was at the height of his ability.

After finishing his active wrestling career, he entered the service of the Hungarian Wrestling Association and is now its vice-president. In September 2013 he was inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame for his services to wrestling .
